Shannon Town A 1-0 Newmarket Celtic B
The B Team's hopes of winning the treble were put to bed this weekend as they were knocked out of the Clare Cup by Shannon Town A.
It could have gone either way on the day with both sides having chances and management will be wondering what might have been if Conor McCarthy would stop copying Mezut Ozil and Seamus Considine and hitting no-look shots.
While Newmarket did have chances, they weren't as clear cut as some of the opportunities the Premier Division holders were presented and but for Brian Tierney it could have been over a little earlier.
In the end, it was a fortunate Gary O'Connell goal that won the game for Town.
The first effort from the edge of the box was parried away by Tierney before he knocked the rebound on to the post but couldn't prevent the third.
Newmarket tried to gain parity but failed to really test Darren Whelan in goal for Shannon Town and their cup run comes to an end for another year.
Manager Johnny Ryan was joined by John Hartnett in the mixed zone with reporters.
Ryan commented: "Kelly? Useless. There's only one ginger centre half on the B Team. Justice for Bernie."
And Hartnett added: "Haha".
Newmarket Celtic: Brian Tierney, Kieran Crosby, Eoin Kelly, Paudie Hayes, Jamie Cronin, Callum McNamara, Monty Mulqueen, Ronan McCormack, Gavin Cusack, Ciaran McCoy, Conor McCa. Subs: Damien McAuley for Cusack, Seamus Considine for McCarthy.
