Newmarket Celtic A 4-0 Avenue United A
The A Team went 11 points clear at the top of the Clare League with a very comprehensive win over Avenue United at the weekend.
Garry Higgins opened the scoring for the hosts. I don't know how as I was still debating whether or not I wanted to get out of bed.
Upon my arrival, Avenue were awarded a penalty kick which ended up being rejected by Shane Cusack who continues to resemble an EasyJet staff member with the new home kit.
A bit of pressure on the Newmarket goal prior to half time was as good as it got for Avenue who eventually succumbed to a heavy defeat in the second half.
Shortly after the break, a cross into the penalty area was fumbled around for a moment before falling to Cathal Hayes with the goal at his mercy and the number one Hayes duly finished.
There was a brief stoppage in play when a spectator was struck in the face with a ball. No serious injury was sustained and the unnamed spectator later commented that she 'headed more ball than Paudie Hayes over the 90 minutes'.
The third goal belonged to Daithi O'Connell and was in no small part down to a great ball from Seamie Lawlor to put him through.
The best was saved til last in terms of the goals with Garry Higgins getting his second and Newmarket's fourth.
Today FM's arch nemesis David O'Grady played the ball to Higgins 30 yards out to the left of Barry Ryan's goal and he weaved his way through the Avenue defence before finishing off a wonderful solo effort.
It will be a minimum of two weeks before the A Team are back in League action with Munster Junior Cup next week followed by FAI Junior Cup action on the 11th.
The club will be running a bus for the FAI Junior Cup match in Galway on the 11th, price will vary depending on numbers so register your interest ASAP.
