Newmarket Celtic B 5-1 Hermitage
The B team were back at it again in the First Division with a resounding victory over Hermitage this morning in front of a crowd of 63,876 (estimate) in McDonough Park.
Despite the best efforts of Niall Quinn to keep the game tight for as long as possible, the strength in depth of Newmarket was far too much for the Ennis side.
They also weren't helped by the fact that they found themselves a goal down within the first five minutes.
A free kick was deflected into the path of Newmarket's very own Djimi Traore and he made no mistake in slotting the ball past the Hermitage goalkeeper.
Those in attendance were screaming for the return of Marty Whelan, formerly of Winning Streak, who has been out long term, a bit too long, with a rib injury.
Ginga got the second midway through the first half and all was nice and rosy until Miltown Malbay's favourite son had his say.
Hermitage had what seemed to be a harmless effort on goal but the Newmarket goalkeeper attempted to 'hadouken' the ball back where it came from and misjudged it completely allowing it to trickle into the goal.
After the break, Ginga got his second after it was put on a plate by Milky and the tiring Hermitage had no substitutes to bring on.
On the other side of things, Newmarket unloaded the bench and it was Ronny (McCormack, not Halpin) who finished out the scoring with a brace of goals.
Those five goals bring the B team's unbeaten run in the league to five games. They sit third, three points behind leaders Lifford A with two games in hand.
After the game, we were treated to both a player and manager interview with Johnny Ryan and Monty Mulqueen holding a press conference in the showers of the home dressing room.
"We all heard what he said about me after the last goal. I'd just like to remind everyone it's no coincidence Miltown didn't win a first Senior Football Championship in 5 years until Quinno retired", said Johnny Ryan commenting on the obscenities directed at the sideline by Niall Quinn during the game.
As for Mulqueen, he directed his comment at Eoin Kelly who was used from the bench today.
"Look at me, I'm the captain now", he said, quoting Barkhad Abdi's character Muse in the hit film Captain Phillips.
