FAI Youths Cup Round 1
Askeaton 1-2 Newmarket Celtic
The Youths team kicked off their FAI campaign with a good win a good win away to a physical Askeaton side.
Despite having just one player available who was of the correct age group for the competition and the remainder made up of U17 players, our lads came away with the spoils.
Having had the better of the play for large parts of the first half, Newmarket finally edged ahead just before the break when Harvey Cullinan fed the ball into Callum McNamara and he made no mistake with the finish.
Askeaton forced their way back into it after half time and their pressure was rewarded with an equaliser in the 55th minute.
This didn't dampen Newmarket's spirits and McNamara in particular who won and scored a penalty which proved to be the winner with ten minutes remaining.
Having picked the ball up 35 yards from goal, he took the scenic route around numerous Askeaton bodies before finally being bundled over. He then fired home from the spot to restore Newmarket's advantage.
Newmarket Celtic: Alan Reidy; Peter Power, Eanna Crimmins, Alex Collins, Stephen Casey; Rob Egan, Harvey Cullinan, Callum McNamara, Tom Nedelec; Cian Foley, Darin Aylmer. Subs: Calum Hussey for Aylmer, Finn Whelan for Nedelec, Ger O'Connor for Power.
SFAI U14 National Cup
Newmarket Celtic 1-2 Listowel Celtic
There was a disappointing finish to the year for this team, who were victorious in League competition as they fell at the hands of Listowel in their National Cup opener today.
Jamie Halpin picked up the Newmarket goal but it wasn't enough as the Kerry outfit weren't fazed by their long journey.
Many thanks to Dean and Daniel for all the hard work that they've put in throughout the year with this team. A disappointing day to end what was a brilliant season for this group of lads.
