Avenue United A 1-3 Newmarket Celtic A
Following last year's early Munster Junior Cup exit at the hands of Avenue United on penalties, there was cause for concern when this year's draw presented the possibility of a rematch.
That concern was only heightened when Avenue took the lead inside the first couple of minutes of the game.
Newmarket battled back into it and with almost the last kick of the first half, Daithi O'Connell grabbed the equaliser.
An excellent tackle from Colin Smyth released O'Connell who showed great strength and composure to finish past the Avenue goalkeeper.
The threat of extra time and penalties was looming again until new signing David Reidy got his first for the club.
The inter-county hurler got on the end of a cross from Ian Collins and finished at the back post.
There was plenty of time left for Avenue to cause some trouble but instead it was one of their former players who sealed the deal.
After some excellent play by Eoin Hayes, he set up Davy McCarthy who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted the ball home.
A trip to either of the Bridges awaits in the 3rd round with Bridge Celtic and Bridge United A yet to play.
