Mountshannon Celtic 1-3 Newmarket Celtic B
The B Team continued their perfect start to the season with a hard-earned win over Mountshannon in what has been their toughest test to date.
The first half was very open with both sides looking to strike first but thanks to Conor Ryan returning to his form of last season and Gavin O'Donnell still feeling the effects of the weekend, Newmarket looked unlikely to break through.
The goal finally came for the reigning champions when Conor McCarthy (nicknamed Milky following an incident with livestock that we cannot comment on due to an ongoing investigation) got in behind, held off the strong challenge of the full back and slotted the ball into the far corner.
The equaliser wasn't long in coming and like our own goal, it was tidily finished past Marty Whelan but unlike the goal conceded to Corofin Harps in last week's Wednesday fixture, it was not from 40 yards.
The second half started at a brisk enough speed and the chances were coming and going for both sides. The breeze at Newmarket's back was giving them the advantage and proved to be the main factor in the 2nd goal.
A good corner kick from Danny Conway blew goalwards and the Mountshannon keeper rose highest and caught the ball. The judge's table were awarding him full marks until he had a bumpy landing which resulted in the ball rolling into the corner of the net.
Marty Whelan unleashed his inner Karate Kid soon after in what he later described as a 'good yellow card'.
The third and final goal came when Youths player John Hartnett aimed a pin point delivery from the left wing into Ciaran McCoy who headed home.
Following the game, Kieran Crosby was allowed out to speak to the media on behalf of his side and he had this to say:
"Did you see me win a header over that lad that was about 6 foot 7? I was like one of those cats that jumps really high? What are they called? Snow leopards or something? Stick that in your report.."
