Newmarket Celtic B 7-1 Corofin Harps
It was the perfect start to the league campaign for the B Team as they dismantled an understrength Corofin Harps in McDonough Park this Wednesday evening.
Following last season's title victory, it was always going to be a tough task to come good again but the slightly altered management of Mark O'Malley, Johnny Ryan, Darren Hayes and Flan Mulqueen look to have ensured no summer hangover.
With three from three for Newmarket in the league cup, Corofin will have known they faced an uphill battle.
There was plenty of talk during the week on social media (mostly by himself) about Conor Ryan's quick start to the season and he now has three goals to his name, albeit one of which was for Hermitage.
Following consultation with his peers, it was decided that it was best if Conor headed the ball back across the goal rather than have a shot and it was this stroke of genius that set up Ciaran McCoy for the opener.
He got his and Newmarket's second minutes later when another cross went all the way to the far post and he had time to take a touch or three and put it in the roof of the net.
Corofin soon pulled one back and to save the blushes of our goalkeeper, we won't go into too much detail.
Although we will say that it was from 40 yards and he's blaming the dodgy cap he had on.
With just one sub togged, the visitors were always going to find it hard against the breeze in the second half and it proved so.
It was, believe or not, Conor Ryan who got the third goal meaning that the two he has scored in the right end this year already betters his total of one shot on target last season. (He's no longer doing shooting training with Kieran Ryan)
Mike Crosby hit the fourth from the edge of the box as younger brother Kieran watched on from the sideline dreaming of Dromoland Golf Course.
A goalkeeper error provided an OG for the fifth goal before Conor McCarthy broke every offside trap ever created to round the goalkeeper and walk the ball into the goal.
The final nail in the coffin came late on when a long free from Danny Conway was sweetly volleyed home by Callum McNamara.
